Working with Children Check Policy

According to Child Protection (Working with Children) Regulation 2013, persons over 18 years of age who work in a face to face contact with children in a child related sector, or work in a stipulated, child related role are required to apply for a Working with Children Check Victoria.

The check involves a national criminal history check and review of findings of workplace misconduct.

The result of a Working with Children Check is either a clearance to work with children for five years, or a bar against working with children. Cleared applicants are subject to ongoing monitoring, and relevant new records may lead to the clearance being revoked.

Persons (over 18 years old) requires to obtain a Working with Children Check clearance includes:

  • Religious personnel
  • Committee member,
  • Youth leader/co-ordinator,
  • Sunday school teacher/ assistant/helper,
  • Catechist and assistant/helper,
  • Child minders for activities including Sunday school, Young Shoots and TSOG classes, Holy week retreat, church camp, Unite, etc.
  • Acolyte/altar server, OLCCC visiting group.& choir
  • Function/activity co-ordinator (if involve children program): Holy week, retreat, church camp, Unite…. etc.

If you are a volunteer, the working with children check will be free. The clearance will be valid for 5 years.

Child safety training

OLCCC will ensure all relevant Committee members, Religious personnel, Youth leader, Sunday school teachers, catechist and assistant/helper, Acolyte/altar server and OLCCC visiting group will attend Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne (CAM) training sessions for Child safe Environment in Vic.

Principles

Our Lady Of China Catholic has a moral, legal and mission-driven responsibility to create nurturing environments where children and young people are respected, their voices are heard and they are safe and feel safe in the OLCCC.

The following principles underpin our commitment to child safety at OLCCC Box Hill

OLCCC has zero tolerance of child abuse.

All children are entitled to, as a fundamental right, safety and protection from all forms of abuse and neglect.

All adults in the OLCCC, including Priest, ExCo members, clergy, parishioners, Sunday school teachers, volunteers, have a responsibility to care for children and young people, to positively promote their wellbeing and to protect them from any kind of harm or abuse.

All people involved in situations where harm is suspected or disclosed must be treated with sensitivity, dignity and respect.

Appropriate confidentiality will be maintained, with information being provided to those who have a right or a need to be informed, either legally or pastorally.

Definitions

Child: A person below the age of 18 years unless, under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier.

Child abuse includes:

  • Physical abuse
  • Sexual abuse (Including grooming)
  • Emotional and Psychological abuse (including racial, cultural and religious abuse)
  • Serious neglect

Policy commitments

All children at OLCCC Box Hill have a right to feel safe and be safe. The wellbeing of children in our care will always be our first priority and we do not and will not tolerate child abuse. We aim to create a child-safe and child-friendly environment where children are free to enjoy life to the full without any concern for their safety. There is particular attention paid to the most vulnerable children, children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and children with disability.

Breach Policy

Where the OLCCC Priest is suspected of breaching any obligation, duty or responsibility within this policy, the concerned party is advised to contact the Vicar General. If there is any reasonable belief that a criminal act has been committed, the concerned party is advised to contact Victoria Police. Where any other members of the OLCCC is suspected of breaching any obligation, duty or responsibility within this policy, the Priest of OLCCC is to take appropriate action or contact Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne (Office of Professional Conduct and Ethics).

Review of this Child Safety Policy

At OLCCC Box Hill, we are committed to continuous improvement of our child safety practice. We intend this policy to be a dynamic document that will be regularly reviewed to ensure it is working in practice and updated to accommodate changes in legislation or circumstance.
